Buchfink Lodge Day

Saturday January 31, 2015

Buchfink Lodge Day will be held Saturday, January 31st this year (2015).

This is also our "Ski for Free" day, as part of the Town of Smithers Spirit of the Mountains Festival.

Schedule of Events:

10 am - Social in the Buchfink Lodge, with treats and hot drinks provided by the board of directors. A great chance to connect with old friends, make new friends, and speak with your board about what matters to you!
11 am - 1 pm: Punch Ski
Register upstairs in the Lodge between 10:30 and 11. Entry is $5 per person and $10 for a family.
1 pm: Meet back at the lodge for snacks, hot chocolate and apple cider, and visiting for all!

About the Punch Ski

When you register, you will be given a punch card with hints about the locations of 8 punch stations. Ski with family and friends (take a trail map) to find the stations and punch your card at each station.

The Punch Ski is not a speed race. Ski at your own pace and collect as many punches as you have time and stamina for.

Some of the punches are on the dog trails for those who want to have their dog sniff out the stations.

There will also be a kids version, using balloons throughout the stadium area.

About Buchfink Lodge Day

On the last Sunday in January every year, the Bulkley Valley Cross Country Ski Club members and families come together to celebrate the lives of the Buchfink family.

On Buchfink Lodge Day, the club executive usually hosts a social event. Recenty, they cooked a free pancake breakfast for club members, with a "Spot Ski" later in the morning to burn off all the calories.

The Buchfink Family embodied participation in Nordic skiing, community, and sport.
Gary, Linda, Brodie, and Molly will forever be remembered in the pictures showcased in the Lodge and in the memories of all who knew them.

The whole family was tragically killed in a helicopter crash in the winter of 1994. Relatives of the Buchfink family donated estate insurance to the club to complete the new Lodge.  The Lodge was dedicated to the Buchfink memory at the first annual Buchfink Family Memorial Ski Lodge Day in 1995.

On the tenth anniversary of the Lodge dedication, the sign on the front of the Lodge was carved and unveiled with surviving family members in attendance.

The next time you are using our wonderful Lodge facilities, take a moment to look through the Buchfink family photos showcased in the display case on the second floor.  Their legacy lives on through our enjoyment of the Buchfink Lodge and all it offers us.
